Sweden's gambling regulator Spelinspektionen puts updated Spelpaus connection rules for licensed online operators into force on 1 August 2026. Regulation SIFS 2026:3 was decided on 23 April and published on 29 April 2026. Every licensee receives a unique Actor ID and API Key from the regulator, and the self-exclusion status check becomes mandatory in real time at new-account registration, at every login attempt, and before any direct marketing message. Before 1 August 2026, operators queried the Spelpaus.se register in batches, with permitted intervals between calls. In practice that left a gap: hours could pass between the moment a player signed up to Spelpaus and the moment a specific operator saw the record. The minimum self-exclusion duration before these changes was one month; the longer options — 3 months, 6 months and indefinite — remain, but a shorter 10-day tier now sits alongside them. This is the biggest technical overhaul of Spelpaus since the register launched in 2019 and part of what Spelinspektionen publicly calls its "year of compliance" — 2026.
In our view the pivotal change is not the new "10-day" button but the shift to real time on the operator side. The batch model left a gap that trapped exactly the players who were most vulnerable. Real-time verification at every login and before every marketing message closes that gap. The same principle runs the other EU RG registers: OASIS in Germany and RUA in Italy. Sweden is finally bringing its technology into line with the level of protection it has long claimed.

What technically changes in Spelpaus from 1 August 2026?
Every licensed operator receives a unique Actor ID and API Key from Spelinspektionen. With these credentials the operator must run a real-time query against the Spelpaus.se register at three checkpoints: before any direct marketing message, at every new-account registration, and at every login to an existing account. A dedicated Marketing API covers marketing; a separate Login API covers registration and login. Batch checks are no longer permitted for these scenarios.
Who does the new 10-day self-exclusion option apply to?
